The artist belongs to that generation aged between 45 and 65, who I feel are not well represented in the exhibition and, though he is far from being a newcomer or unknown in France and Germany, his work deserves to be presented on an international stage more often. Udo Zembok’s glass monoliths, sometimes brought together as a diptych, are the result of a rigorous and exacting process using industrial float glass as a raw material. Several sheets –here up to seven- are fused and thermoformed, initially giving a simple, minimalist curve that allows these “thick veils” to be self-supporting and the screen to be independent of any structure. This absence of heterogeneous support is vital for achieving an un impended perception of the effect of materiel – light – colour. These divers colours and textures are distributed at each interface between the plates and thus in the thickness of this new material which, as it is being processed, becomes something other than industrial glass and reclaims the sensual and mythical richness of glass hand-crafted by an artisan. Even though compositions magnifying the horizons often pay homage to the work of Rothko – a homage that is clearly assumed - , the perception when seeing the work live (as opposed to photographs) is completely different, particularly with regards to their luminosity and the transition between colours. Finally, we have here a special and completely new material with a subtle range of transparent colours and majestic and monumental forms, echoing craftsmanship traditionally associated with stained glass.
